Paul used the knife to carefully open the envelope. He peered inside, used two fingers to slide out the folded sheet of paper. The paragraph read: The enclosed drive has all of the information you requested. You’ll see the IDs to the numbers he had stored and the apps on his phone. We included numbers from the call log for the week leading up to the murder. Many are numbers from people stored on his phone. They include a dozen senators and as many members of congress. Others are lobbyists, the VP of the NRA, and more. He was speaking with a few people in the president’s inner circle, i.e., Sami Botros, Secretary of State Willow, Chief of Staff Charles Sanders and more. The FBI and the agency are following up on everything; however, it seems to be standard phone communications for a senior senator like Fairchild. Nothing appears out of the usual. Good luck, - BG

Paul inserted the thumb drive in his computer and watched the data load. He scanned through the names Senator Fairchild had stored in his personal contact list. Many of the names he recognized—mostly senators and members of congress, plus one member of the U.S. Supreme Court. But he also recognized names of corporate CEOs for Fortune 500 companies. There were names of family members, and initials only—and even listings he referred to as Popeye, Spiderman, Batman, and finally Superman. Paul assumed the superhero names were people the senator had to disguise, but the numbers were there. And if there were numbers, there were ways to track people around the planet.

Paul studied the apps that Fairchild had on his phone. There weren’t many, a few ride share companies, a weather app, Amazon, and even an app to order flowers and food. Paul could tell that the latest one downloaded was one for a fitness tracker. He keyed in phone numbers with no IDs attached to them, looking for names. He examined the frequency and length of recent calls.

Paul noticed that Fairchild had called Sami Botros, one of the president’s closest advisors, three times in the week leading up to Fairchild’s murder. Twice Fairchild had spoken with Ward Rosenberg, Deputy Director of the FBI. Both calls less than a minute each. Paul leaned back in his chair, thinking about the heated conversation between Rosenberg and Botros in the Oval Office when Rosenberg said, ‘We get a Frankenstein hybrid of a monster Muslim who wants to move the line in the sand all the way back to their very first war with America.’

Botros had fired back, ‘Muslims don’t hold a monopoly on evil. Your surname is Rosenberg. Alfred Rosenberg was found guilty of war crimes during the Nuremberg trials. However, it would be appalling of me to think all Germans, or someone with a shared surname, such as Rosenberg, would be remotely connected to Nazis.’

Paul looked at his watch. When he had time, he’d run more systematic cyber searches using the phone numbers of both men to see if they had a circuitous link back to Fairchild.
